Increase Your Sales - 6 Steps to Ensure Your Success

Aug 28, 2009

Everyone at the moment is doing business in the same economy and yet some are growing and some are shrinking. Here are a couple of things to avoid if you want to grow in this economy.

1.The mindset that we are in a global recession and there is nothing we can do to improve our sales.
2. Rushing out and placing ads everywhere in the hope it will drive more people to your site. (Spending money on marketing that cannot be measured)

Everything you do must be thought through and it must be able to provide feedback so you can monitor its success, so forget it when a salesman comes to your business with a sure fire way to improve your sales because if you accept, the only sales that will be improved are his.

6 positive steps to improve your sales

1.Use Compelling Sales Copy

Sales copy is the written sales script the accompanies any of your products. Some people do not use copy at all and they are missing out. Products do not sell themselves. If your sales copy is good it will get the customer to buy or be seriously interested in the product the copy is for. This takes me to the next step.

2.Improve your selling techniques

The techniques to use to sell your product will ultimately decide if you close a sale or not. Every step that you took to get your customer to this point could be wasted if your selling skills are not up to scratch.

If you business is online then make sure the checkout is easy to use, secure, and offers multiple methods of payment. If your business closes sales over the phone then you need to make sure the person who closes is properly trained and motivated to close every sale. The same goes for face to face selling. Remember, its not what you sell, its the way that you sell it.

3. Keeping It Shiny

You must always keep your shop in order. That goes for online or offline stores. Keep things interesting.

If your store is online then rotate your stock on the front page. Keep product information upto date. Use only the best photos. If you have a bricks and mortar shop then keep it clean, really clean. Do not allow dust to build up on slow moving lines. Keep your displays up to date.

By rotating stock and using shiny new displays you can move stock that would otherwise go unnoticed by your customers. Many of your customers are just browsers and 'in your face' displays keep them coming back to see whats new.

4.Measurable Advertising

If your business is well established and has been going for a long time then you probably use some forms of advertising that you used when you started out. Its important to review all forms of advertising before renewal. Directory listings like yellow pages are no longer very rewarding and that same money cab be spent on other measurable forms of marketing.

If your business is online or offline you can still benefit from online marketing. Try having a YouTube video explaining your site ( The title would need to be specific to your business and it will rank well in the search engines). If you use newspaper ads then use coupons or a dedicated phone number so you can measure the success of this method.

For online businesses I recommend trying Google AdWords because once purchased you can be sure you will get a set number of people to your site, at which point its up to you to sell your product.

If your marketing is proven not to work then stop spending on that method immediately. If it is proven to work for you the double the amount of money you spend on that method and measure the results again.

5.Expand Your Horizons.

The internet has allowed us to have a world economy and single marketplace. It really is time to move out of your own back yard into this vast global space.

Have a look at the economy in different countries. They all will be affected by the recession but it will have affected them differently. Perhaps you can export your service or product to another country. Diversify to survive.

6.Spend More Time Marketing

It is essential that you spend more time marketing your business and products. Having a good product, good customer service and great sales copy is only the beginning. Marketing will connect you to your customers - without which your business is worthless.

Remember repeat and increase what works and eliminate what does not. Try new methods of marketing, but only if they allow you to measure the results.

These are the basic principles to enhancing your business. More in depth articles can be found to expand each point. More information and services for marketing your business can be found at:
