The Case of Studio 1.1 brings out the fundamental reason why many companies are trying to exploit the Internet: the opportunity to take advantage of a source of additional income available from a channel marketing and alternative distribution. We can recognize the marketing opportunities afforded by the use of the Internet by examining the array of development strategies [Ansoff (1957)]. You can use the Internet to achieve each of the four following strategic guidelines.

1. Market penetration. The Internet can be used in existing markets to sell larger quantities of products already available. You can achieve this by using the Internet for an advertising campaign, thus introduce potential customers to an existing market their products and the profile of your company. This use of the Internet is kind of conservative.

2. Market development. In this case the Internet is used to make sales in new markets, taking advantage of the advantage of being able to advertise their products internationally, low cost, without the need for supporting infrastructure for sales in the country where the customers reside. This is also a relatively conservative use of the Internet, but involves the overcoming of national boundaries and the need to become exporters, or at least the need to operate in a larger number of countries.

3. Product development. Are developing new products or services that may be provided over the Internet. This is typically information products, such as market research, which can be purchased using electronic commerce. This is an innovative use of the Internet.

4. Diversification. In this quadrant are developed new products to sell in new markets.

Companies can use the Internet to adopt new approaches to selling products, positioning itself in one quadrant of the grid shown in Use Interne! for new markets and products.
